The “Feel good” movie that I chose to suggest is “Mamma Mia!” (from 2008), directed by Phyllida Llyod. It is a lighthearted, amusing and cheerful musical movie, that with the most famous ABBA songs will certainly chase away the winter blues and lift your spirits up!
The story is about the twenty-year-old soon bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried), fiancèe to Sky (Dominic Cooper), who finds in her mother’s diary that one of three strangers might be her father: the very wealthy architect Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), the respected London banker Harry Bright (Colin Firth), or the renowned traveller writer Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård).
Sophie dreams about having what her mother never had, a traditional white wedding with her father accompanying her down the aisle, so she decides to invite all three gentlemen without her mother’s knowledge, being sure that once she saw the trio she would instantly recognize her dad. All three men show up at Villa Donna, the hotel owned by Donna (Sophie’s mom), while also Sophie’s iconic aunties, also former members of the Dynamos trio along with Donna, the three times divorcèe Tanya Cresham-Leigh (Christine Baranski) and the well-known cookbooks’ author Rosie Mulligan (Julie Walters). What will happen when Donna will see resurfaces the past she strongly tried to bury?
It is a movie that can be seen by absolutely everyone, it can be seen during a family night, or during a girls’ night. It has many elements that make it a “Feel good” movie, such as all the comical situations, the hilarious characters, and their bizarre ideas, but mostly you will probably find yourself jumping up and down or dancing while singing all the lovely and iconic, and why not sometimes heart-breaking, songs chosen from ABBA’s albums. I highly recommend watching this movie while feeling sad or even bored,it will feel like a hug and it will also remind you that there is always a resolution.
